Taking Family Planning on the Road: How RH Bike Patrol Bridged Gaps During the Pandemic

When COVID-19 restrictions limited mobility, access to reproductive health services suffered. The Philippine Society for Responsible Parenthood and UNFPA Philippines responded with a project focused on protecting the health of women and young people during the crisis. We were commissioned to implement the RH Bike Patrol component in Laguna and Rizal.

Rolling Out Services Where People Live

We launched RH Bike Patrol Teams to bring services straight to the communities. Using bikes, health workers transported family planning supplies and conducted a wide range of outreach activities. These included small and large group sessions, virtual consultations, and dedicated classes for mothers and fathers. The goal was simple, to keep services going even when travel was difficult.

Results That Went Beyond the Target

By June 2022, we reached 5,332 individuals with family planning information. Of these, 4,772 adopted a modern method. Implants accounted for 61 percent of acceptors, followed by injectables, condoms, and pills. We also conducted vasectomy orientation sessions that led to 14 men choosing the procedure. These numbers reflect not only strong demand but also a delivery system that worked.

Partnerships That Made It Possible

The success of RH Bike Patrol depended on deep collaboration. Local government units, Provincial Health Offices, health staff, and Barangay Health Workers all played essential roles. They helped lead advocacy meetings, mobilize communities, and ensure service delivery moved forward smoothly. This multisectoral approach allowed us to work with speed and reach.

Sustaining the Effort Beyond the Project

At the close of the project, we handed over the family planning database and remaining commodities to local health units to support ongoing use. Barangay Health Workers and municipal pages continued posting on social media to keep communities informed. These efforts helped transition the work from a time-bound project to a more sustainable, community-owned program.

Why RH Bike Patrol Mattered

This initiative showed that community-based and mobile health strategies can work under pressure. With creativity, coordination, and local leadership, family planning services remained available even during a national emergency. The lessons and systems developed continue to guide how services can adapt in future challenges.
