Evaluating Mass Drug Administration Against Lymphatic Filariasis in Oriental Mindoro

APMARGIN was engaged to assess how well the preventive chemotherapy campaign for Lymphatic Filariasis reached the people of Oriental Mindoro. Our team took on this role through field data collection, analysis, and close coordination with local health offices. The goal was to offer an accurate picture of the Mass Drug Administration’s performance and inform future strategies for improving its reach.

Purpose of the Campaign

The Department of Health implemented the Mass Drug Administration to help eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis in areas where transmission risk remains. This campaign involved giving a yearly dose of antifilarial drugs to individuals at risk. While distribution took place at the community level, the key question was whether the campaign truly reached its intended recipients.

What the Study Did

Our team carried out a Coverage Evaluation Survey in selected barangays. We visited households with eligible individuals and used the standard World Health Organization protocol to ensure the accuracy of our findings. The survey aimed to measure drug coverage, examine levels of awareness, and understand the reasons some residents did not receive or take the treatment.

What the Findings Showed

Survey data revealed a gap between the coverage reported by local health units and the actual coverage verified on the ground. While official reports suggested high reach, our survey found that some communities did not achieve the expected levels. Common reasons included the absence of household members during the distribution period, hesitation to take the medicine, and limited awareness of the campaign.

The study also pointed to operational challenges. Some individuals found it difficult to reach health workers or were unsure about where to get the medication. Others voiced concerns about side effects, which suggested that better communication and reassurance could improve future participation.

What Can Be Done Next

The results offer local health units and the Department of Health a basis for making improvements. Strengthening community awareness efforts, improving campaign logistics, and building public confidence in the safety and value of treatment are all important next steps.

If you are involved in Lymphatic Filariasis elimination or interested in learning more about the full study, we welcome the opportunity to share our findings. Feel free to reach out through our contact page.
