Celebrating 35 Years of FETP and Strengthening Public Health

In 2022, we supported the Department of Health’s Field Epidemiology Training Program during its 35th Founding Anniversary through a week-long scientific conference and graduation ceremony held at The Manor, Camp John Hay in Baguio City. The event brought together epidemiologists, public health leaders, and program graduates to reflect on the country’s progress in field epidemiology and its growing role in national health priorities.

Focusing on Learning, Leadership, and Innovation

The five-day gathering celebrated the FETP’s mission of training epidemiologists who lead outbreak investigations, disease surveillance, and evidence-informed health policies. The program featured presentations of case studies on diarrheal outbreaks, cholera, and gastroenteritis. It also included skill-building workshops on Google Big Query, Power BI, pandemic resiliency, and policy communication.

A Community of Experts Recommitting to Public Service

Distinguished guests shared their insights and calls to action. Among them were Dr. Rio Magpantay, Dr. Maria Consorcia Lim-Quizon, Dr. Manuel Dayrit, Dr. Alethea de Guzman, and Dr. Enrique Tayag. They underscored the essential role of strong epidemiology units in realizing the vision of Universal Health Care. The graduation of Batch 29 and Batch 30 capped off the event, with fellows pledging to uphold the FETP legacy of protecting population health through data and rapid response.

Celebrating Milestones and Recognizing Excellence

The Milestone Gallery featured poster exhibits from Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Units. These covered surveillance studies on hand, foot, and mouth disease, COVID-19 surges, cholera, and acute gastroenteritis. The event also honored exceptional contributions to epidemiology through the Budsy Award and Mark White Award.

Workshops That Prepare the Next Generation

We helped facilitate breakout sessions that focused on practical tools and digital platforms for data management and visualization. Sessions also explored effective communication with decision-makers. These hands-on workshops aimed to strengthen outbreak response, improve data systems, and support evidence-based policymaking.
