Hospitals Overwhelmed After Powerful Earthquake Strikes Cebu

October 1, 2025

Cebu, Philippines — A devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake shook northern Cebu on Tuesday night, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured, while putting immense strain on the region’s health system.

Hospitals and Patients Evacuated

Several hospitals in Cebu, including facilities in Bogo City near the epicenter, were forced to evacuate patients and medical staff due to fears of building collapse and continued aftershocks. Emergency wards are now overflowing as the injured arrive in large numbers. Doctors and nurses have been working round the clock, treating trauma cases ranging from fractures and head injuries to wounds caused by falling debris.

Disrupted Health Services

With power outages and infrastructure damage, essential hospital services such as surgery, dialysis, and maternity care are being disrupted. Backup generators are running but supply lines for medicine, blood, and medical equipment remain uncertain.

Risk of Secondary Health Problems

Health experts warn that beyond the immediate trauma cases, survivors in evacuation centers may face infections, dehydration, and respiratory illness, especially where clean water and sanitation are limited. Children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

Mental Health Concerns

Psychologists are also raising alarms about the emotional toll of the disaster. Survivors, many of whom have lost loved ones or homes, are reporting anxiety, sleeplessness, and fear of aftershocks. Experts say urgent mental health support is needed alongside physical medical care.

Call for Support

Local officials have appealed for medical reinforcements, blood donations, and emergency supplies as Cebu’s health sector struggles to cope. The Department of Health has dispatched medical teams and relief goods, but responders say the need remains overwhelming.

For now, Cebu’s hospitals remain at the frontlines treating the injured and also serving as shelters of hope in a time of great uncertainty.
